WHAT IS CARBON NEUTRAL? HOW TO ACHIEVE CARBON NEUTRAL?

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is the most prevalent greenhouse gas and the primary cause of global warming, leading to numerous alarming consequences for the entire global ecosystem. Therefore, actions aimed at achieving Net Zero in general or Carbon Neutral in particular are becoming more urgent than ever.

1. What is Carbon Neutral?

Carbon Neutral is the balance between the amount of CO2 emissions produced from activities such as production and transportation and the amount of CO2 absorbed from the atmosphere. Reducing CO2 emissions is usually achieved by removing carbon or offsetting carbon.

2. Why is Carbon Neutral an Unavoidable Goal?

At the 24th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 24), Germanwatch released the 2019 Long-Term Climate Risk Index report. This report highlighted the escalating consequences of climate change, emphasizing the urgency of taking action before the situation becomes increasingly uncontrollable. Notably, Vietnam ranked 6th among the 10 countries most severely affected by climate change.

Countries worldwide, including Vietnam, must continuously endure erratic changes from nature, with hardly any time to recover from successive natural disasters. The report also presented alarming statistics, summarizing over 11,500 extreme weather events from 1998 to 2017, resulting in 526,000 deaths and about $3.47 trillion in damages globally.

In response to these challenges, countries and businesses worldwide need to intensify efforts to adapt and implement practical solutions in the fight against climate change. The concept of "Carbon Neutral" should not just remain a trend but become a mandatory responsibility for the survival of our planet.

In summary, achieving Carbon Neutral requires strong commitment, swift and specific actions, and cannot be delayed. Carbon Neutral is a crucial step towards achieving Net Zero emissions, demonstrating the commitment of organizations to start acting to mitigate their environmental impact.

3. How to Achieve Carbon Neutral?

Achieving Carbon Neutral is a long process that requires efforts from all parties, including governments, businesses, and individuals. To achieve Carbon Neutral quickly, effectively, and sustainably, the following steps can be taken:

3.1 Measure - Calculate CO2 Emissions

By measuring and understanding the carbon emissions generated by daily production and transportation activities, businesses can identify the main sources of emissions, quantify them, and focus on areas that need reduction.

Carbon content can be calculated using methods such as emission factors, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), or Climate Modeling. The choice of calculation method depends on the intended use, required accuracy, and the specific situation of each business.

3.2 Reduce CO2 Emissions

- Use Renewable Energy: Transitioning to green energy by phasing out coal-fired power plants and moving towards cleaner, renewable energy sources is essential. Investing in and applying renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, or biomass fuels helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and effectively and sustainably eliminates CO2 emissions.

- Use Energy Efficiently: Seizing opportunities for technology transfer and implementing energy-saving measures and optimizing production and transportation processes are effective ways to reduce carbon emissions.

- Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): Businesses can apply CCS technology to capture CO2 from emission sources and transport it to safe, long-term storage sites such as deep underground geological formations or under the seabed. This technology can be applied in energy production facilities or large CO2 emitting factories.

- Increase Recycling and Reuse: This is one of the most effective measures to reduce waste and make good use of natural resources. The decomposition of waste produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. Promoting recycling and reuse also helps businesses limit the consumption of new resources, thus contributing to CO2 emission reduction.

3.3 Offset CO2

- Purchase Carbon Credits: This is a way to offset the carbon emissions produced by a business during its production process. Businesses and organizations can buy carbon credits from emission reduction projects to offset their emissions.

- Invest in Emission Reduction Projects: These projects include reforestation, carbon capture, etc. Businesses and organizations can invest in these projects to offset emissions that cannot be reduced.
