AUSTRALIAN COAL: POTENTIAL IMPORT FUEL SOURCE IN VIETNAM
Australian coal is one of Australia's largest energy sources and is used mainly in coal-fired power plants. Australia's coal reserves rank third in the world. According to estimates, with current coal resources, Australia may have enough to exploit for more than 300 years.
1. Overview of Australian Coal
Currently, Australia is one of the countries with the largest coal reserves in the world. According to statistics, Australia's total coal reserves amount to 144.818 million tons, accounting for 14% of the world's total coal reserves (ranking third in the world). Among them, there are 68.310 million tons of anthracite and bituminous coal (referred to as black coal) and 76.508 million tons of sub-bituminous and lignite (referred to as brown coal).
Black coal resources are distributed in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia, with New South Wales (23%) and Queensland (63%) having the largest shares in Australia's total resources. These two states are also the largest coal producers in Australia. The main coal-producing basin is in Queensland and Sydney (New South Wales), with significant coal mining activities including Collie in Western Australia, Leigh Creek in South Australia, and Fingal and Kimbolton in Tasmania.
Brown coal is mainly found in Victoria and scattered in South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland. Currently, brown coal is mined in Victoria with open-cut mines in Anglesea, Loy Yang, Yallourn, and Hazelwood to supply nearby power plants, and mining in Maddingley to produce soil conditioner and fertilizer. Other products from Victorian brown coal are used in industry and households with low ash and sulfur content.

2. The Potential of Australian Coal
Mining is one of the earliest industries in Australia, contributing 5.6% to GDP but accounting for up to 35% of exports. Coal is a resource mined in all states of the country, with 75% of coal production exported, mainly to the Asian market. Based on global market demand and limited supply, the forecast for Australian thermal coal prices by 2030 could increase to $160.0 - $166.7 per ton.
In Australia, nearly 80% of coal is mined from open-cut mines, while the global average for open-cut mines accounts for only 40% of total coal mines, with the rest underground. Open-cut mining allows for the recovery of up to 90% of resources, with many brown coal seams near the surface, hundreds of meters thick, and easily exploitable. Due to this advantage, the cost of coal mining in Australia is lower than in other countries. According to calculations by experts, with reserves like these, Australian coal could be mined for over 300 years.
Australia's coal mining industry is continuously improved to ensure the safety of miners and the environment. Australia is a reliable producer of high-quality thermal and metallurgical coal internationally. With advanced mining, handling, transportation technology, and effective management practices, Australian coal imported into Vietnam always ensures quality and cost-effectiveness.
In the future, the Australian coal industry will continue to operate to produce and export high-quality coal, replacing low-quality coal that emits more emissions to control pollution and climate change. Energy solutions will make coal-fired power plants more environmentally friendly.
3. Advantages of Australian Coal
- High calorific value: Australian coal has a high calorific value when burned, making it suitable for use as fuel in boilers or thermal power plants. Additionally, Australian coal is easy to burn alongside other fuels such as wood, charcoal, and sawdust.
- Stable quality: Australian coal has stable technical properties and a durable structure, enhancing combustion efficiency in thermal power plants and cement factories.
- High applicability: Australian coal is imported in large quantities to Vietnam due to its high applicability. In addition to being used as fuel in thermal power plants, Australian coal is also widely used in industries such as cement production, metallurgy, chemical technology, synthetic fibers, and plastics.
- Abundant production: Australia has about 7% of coal reserves for commercial mining. The Australian coal industry is focusing not only on mining but also on improving quality. Therefore, Australian coal has promising prospects for further development in the future.
- Low cost: Thanks to abundant supply, large open-cut coal mines, and low production costs, Australian coal meets stable supply in export markets, ensuring competitive prices.
4. Benefits of Importing Australian Coal
Up to now, Vietnam has cooperated with many reputable imported coal sources in the world, of which Australian coal is highly appreciated and is one of the main sources in the imported coal market because, this is a source of quality coal with stable, competitive prices and maximally deployed logistic and technology solutions. Vietnam's imported Australian coal sources are mainly brown coal and black coal. Australian coal output accounts for nearly 30% of the country's total coal imports.
Australia's coal resources are abundant, and of good quality, and the Australian government encourages and creates conditions for investors to exploit coal resources. Foreign companies and corporations mainly from Japan, India, and Thailand have invested in coal mining in Australia for decades.
Due to the combination of geographical advantages and geological conditions, in addition to careful development and management, Australia's thermal coal industry has several key advantages, including the use of advanced technologies, stable production environments, world-class railway and port infrastructure, owner-operator mining methods, where the mine owner manages and controls the contractor's activities, and consumes products from Australian coal.
5. Thuan Hai - Trusted Importer of Australian Coal in Vietnam
As one of the first private enterprises to import commercial coal in Vietnam, Thuan Hai has built long-term cooperative relationships with major coal mines, which is also an advantage that helps us ensure stable and continuous coal reserves.
Thuan Hai commits to product quality by directly surveying coal mines and rigorously inspecting coal sources before transportation to Vietnam. To maintain quality stability, coal is stored and preserved in enclosed warehouses equipped with roofs, conveyor belts, and dust filtration systems to protect the environment, investing in modern equipment (laboratory, moisture test machines, thermal test machines, etc.) to regularly control the quality of fuel from input to output.
Thuan Hai has built a system of 6 satellite warehouses stretching from North to South with a total capacity of 1.2 million tons, located near industrial zones and major transportation routes, facilitating the import and storage of fuel. Additionally, we have a fleet of over 100 transport vehicles to optimize costs and transportation time for customers. Purchasing procedures will also be conducted quickly and professionally.
